The late Amy Winehouse's second and final studio album, Back To Black, is a modern-day soul classic and a sad testament to what might have been.
Amy Winehouse's affably jazzy debut, Frank, was veritably teeming with potential and the young London singer more than lived up to expectations when Back To Black came around three years later in 2006.
Mining her troubled private life and her tumultuous relationship with then-boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil for warts-and-all details, Winehouse comes off as notably more confident as a lyricist and a songwriter here, while also taking growing command of her powerful voice. Producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi enlisted ace New York soul/R&B outfit the Daptones to add some grit and swagger to her performances and the end result was an instant classic -- seriously, the moment "Rehab" rips out of the gate you know something special is going on here -- and a transatlantic smash hit that has since sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
Sadly, Winehouse's problems with substance abuse were already beginning to derail her career during the extended touring cycle behind Back To Black and sessions for a follow-up record with Ronson fizzled out quickly, with the producer lamenting publicly that the singer wasn't in a position to make another album in her present state of disarray. Winehouse subsequently died of alcohol poisoning at her home in Camden Town, putting a premature end to what could have been a long and fruitful run. But at least she went out on a high note.
