Your favourite artist's favourite artist, The Velvet Underground were often misunderstood during the prime years of their career between 1964 and 1974. The band's integration of the avant-garde into rock and roll led to some of the most influential records in the history of popular music but it also meant that audiences tastes needed a few years to process the band's greatness. Without the Velvet Underground, we would not have punk, new wave or indie rock. The band only achieved commercial success in the mid-80s after successive rounds of retroactive reviews praised the band's experimentation and creativity.
