Tyler the Creator gives more of himself while forcing himself to say less on his up-close-and-personal fifth album, Flower Boy.
Tyler the Creator was always a bit of an open book, even during the most theatrical of his theatrical early days, but on 2017's Flower Boy he challenged himself to open his heart in the studio more than ever before while also trimming his rhymes to a bare minimum.
"For [2015's] Cherry Bomb I purposely was, like, I don't want to get personal at all. I'm just going to make songs," he said in an interview at the time. "And in this one I was like alright, let me write down every feeling."
The result was yet another critically acclaimed Tyler the Creator album, with Flower Boy landing on countless "best of" lists at the end of the year. The record also sold incredibly well for a fairly challenging mix of hazy nu-skool R&B and to-the-point rap verses, debuting at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard album chart and spawning four well-received singles: "Who Dat Boy/911," "Boredom," "I Ain't Got Time!" and "See You Again." The guest list on Flower Boy, meanwhile, was a testament to the respect Tyler commands in the modern hip-hop/R&B community and beyond: Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky, Rex Orange County, Kali Uchis, Schoolboy Q, Steve Lacy and many more. There could be no lingering doubt after this album that Tyler the Creator was one of 21st-century hip-hop's most creative and bankable figures.
