Call Me If You Get Lost gave Tyler the Creator another No. 1 album despite being another Tyler the Creator album that dashes most of your previous conceptions of Tyler the Creator. While referencing Baudelaire. Of course.

Tyler the Creator's seventh album presents a widescreen vision of all the Tylers that came before, defying expectations once again yet maintaining the essential nuggets of each that have turned this Odd Future-born iconoclast into one of the most bizarrely bankable hip-hop stars on the planet.

Call Me If You Get Lost, released in June of 2021, is rougher and "rappier" and far more reminiscent of Tyler's grotty early recordings than its 2019 predecessor, Igor, but it's still unmistakably the work of a genre-oblivious mad genius at the height of his powers. Synth-pop, bossa nova, reggae, soul, future-R&B, jazz and god knows what else slip in and out of the musical mix, while cover art depicting an ID card in the name of "Tyler Baudelaire" and an opening cut titled "Sir Baudelaire" provide endless food for thematic thought for invested observers as the whole thing plays out -- although, for the record, Tyler claims he's referencing Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events rather than the French poet. You figure it out.

It doesn't really matter, does it? Maybe there's nothing to figure out. Call Me If You Get Lost is another terrific, beautifully baffling grower of a record from a major talent who's still not even in his mid-30s. And despite its decidedly challenging nature, it became Tyler the Creator's second album to reach the top of the Billboard album chart. The "pop" audience is waaaaaaay smarter than you think.
