Toots and the Maytals helped popularize Reggae, with hits like "Pressure Drop" and the album "Sweet and Dandy", a key part of the genre's rise.
Toots and the Maytals, one of the most celebrated Ska and Rocksteady bands, played a key role in bringing Reggae music to the forefront. Formed in the early 1960s, frontman Toots Hibbert, who passed away in 2020, is regarded as a reggae pioneer alongside legends like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. His soulful voice, often compared to Otis Redding, earned him recognition as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top 100 male singers.
Their influential 1968 hit "Do the Reggay" was the first song to use the term "Reggae," helping to define the genre and introducing it globally. The group’s third album, Sweet and Dandy, was released on Beverley's Records the same year. Sweet and Dandy captures the vibrant Jamaican music scene of the late ‘60s, showcasing the transition from ska and rocksteady to reggae as Jamaica’s national sound and an international phenomenon, featuring tracks like "Pressure Drop," "Monkey Man," and "54-56 (That's My Number)."
This heavyweight vinyl was produced by Orchard Enterprises in 2024 and made in the UK.
