Thelonious Monk Septet's Grammy Hall of Fame inductee features some of the best solos in the careers of jazz legends John Coltrane and Art Blakey.
Monk's Music, released in November 1957, features Thelonious Monk's septet, including jazz legends Coleman Hawkins, Art Blakey, and John Coltrane. Recorded in New York, the album opens with the hymn "Abide With Me", played by the brilliant horn section. Another standout track, "Ruby, My Dear", highlights Monk alongside Hawkins, Wilbur Ware, and Blakey.
Monk, known for his innovative compositions and eccentric style, energetically cues Coltrane for the first solo on "Well, You Needn't." Monk's Music is the only album that Hawkins and Blakey recorded together. Notably, the stereo and mono mixes differ dramatically, with the stereo offering a more distant sound and less audible bass. Many critics and fans regard the mono mix as the superior version.
2024 mono reissue released via Concord Jazz.
