The second studio album from avant-garde pioneers The Velvet Underground, released on January 30, 1968, marked the band's final collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and founding member John Cale. White Light/White Heat continues the band's exploration of provocative themes, such as sex, amphetamines, and drag queens, much like their debut. Lou Reed drew inspiration from various authors, including William S. Burroughs and Alice Bailey, crafting beautifully chaotic storylines that introduce a range of eclectic characters, as seen in tracks like "The Gift" and "Sister Ray". Musically, Reed was especially influenced by jazz, particularly the free jazz improvisation of Ornette Coleman.
