The debut cult classic from The 13th Floor Elevators revolutionized rock music, pioneering the subgenre of psychedelic rock with its innovative, mind-altering and non-conventional timbres and instruments.
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is the debut album from American rock band The 13th Floor Elevators, released in 1966. Its pioneering sound blends psychedelia, hard rock, garage rock, folk, and blues, and it introduced the distinctive use of the electric jug, particularly on their hit "You're Gonna Miss Me", which reached No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s second single, "Reverberation (Doubt)" hit No. 129 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart. Notably, the album is considered the first to use the term "psychedelic", influencing the era's countercultural music movement.
The 13th Floor Elevators, led by Roky Erickson, became one of the first groups to promote the idea of psychedelic music as a consciousness-expanding experience, with their lyrics and sound heavily influenced by hallucinogenic drugs, aligning them with the emerging counterculture of the 1960s.
