(Blue vinyl) Wayne Shorter's acclaimed 1966 album features a stellar lineup that includes Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones.
Speak No Evil, the sixth album by jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, released in June 1966 by Blue Note Records is a groundbreaking album that blends hard bop and modal jazz, showcasing Shorter on tenor saxophone alongside a stellar lineup that includes trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones.
Recorded during Shorter’s influential period as a member of Miles Davis’s mid-1960s quintet, Speak No Evil is often hailed as one of his finest albums and a highlight in the Blue Note catalogue. The Penguin Guide to Jazz lists it in its "Core Collection", praising it as "by far Shorter’s most satisfying record". Music critic Murray Horwitz described it in 2001 as a consolidation of Shorter’s compositional excellence, calling it a "manifesto" of his innovative ideas, ideas that remain fresh even decades later. Renowned author Ian Carr noted that the album is "a classic in terms of both composition and improvisation", inspiring countless musicians. Additionally, New York Times critic Ben Ratliff included it in his guide Jazz: A Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings, highlighting its role in introducing a gnomic compositional style that would leave a lasting mark on jazz.
2024 reissue pressed on blue vinyl, released via the Blue Note 85 Classic Vinyl Series.
