Travis Scott's third album, Astroworld, is a psychedelic hip-hop thrill ride.
Travis Scott named his third album after a defunct amusement park in his hometown of Houston, and that's as good a metaphor for the captivatingly stoned strangeness to be found on Astroworld as any.
Released to rave reviews and a No. 1 debut on the U.S. Billboard album chart in August of 2018, Astroworld took the bleary-eyed, trap-damaged sound Scott established on Rodeo and Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight and spun it into a psyched-out, kaleidoscopic dystopian future landscape that the MC hoped would sound like "taking an amusement park away from kids." It's a credit to his vision that Astroworld's roster of high-profile guests -- Frank Ocean, Drake, the Weeknd, James Blake, Juice Wrld and Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire among them -- disappear into that landscape rather than dominating it. This is the Travis Scott record to beat.
As The Line Of Best Fit put it most eloquently at the time: "Scott could have easily made another distorted, debaucherous project like his previous two albums, but by emphasizing his vocal performances and finding the best middle ground he ever has with his bevy of superstar collaborators, he's made Astroworld a theme park worth revisiting whether you came in as a stan or a skeptic."
