Sade’s Grammy award-winning, triple platinum fifth album blends soul, R&B and reggae influences with some of Sade Adu's most personal and emotionally vulnerable songwriting to create a masterpiece of early 2000s soul.
Lovers Rock, the fifth studio album by the English soul band Sade, takes its name from the romantic reggae subgenre "lovers rock", a style frontwoman Sade Adu grew up listening to. Shifting away from the jazz influences of their earlier work, Sade embraced a broader palette of sounds, blending soul, R&B, soft rock, folk, dub, reggae, and neo-soul.
The production on Lovers Rock is noted for its minimalist approach, featuring sparse arrangements with subtle reggae touches. As a concept album, its lyrics explore the highs and lows of love, delving into both joy and heartache, while also weaving in social and political themes. The album produced two standout singles: "By Your Side" and "King of Sorrow", and was followed by the successful Lovers Rock Tour. Commercially, it reached number 18 on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200. In the U.S., it went triple platinum, selling over 3 million copies by 2010.
2024 remaster features a recreation of the original packaging, a half-speed remaster of all the album's songs re-recorded from the original studio mixes at Abbey Road Studios, released via Legacy Recordings.
