1974 Canada, VG+
Rush is the debut studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released on March 18, 1974, in Canada through Moon Records, the band's own label. It was later released internationally by Mercury Records within the same year. Recorded five years after the band's formation, this album features the hard rock sound that was popular among many emerging rock bands of the early 1970s. Influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Yes, and Cream are evident throughout the album.
Original drummer John Rutsey played all the drum parts on the album but had to retire from the band after its release due to complications with his diabetes, which made extended touring difficult. Although Rutsey contributed to the album's lyrics, he did not submit them to the band. Instead, the lyrics were entirely written by vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson. Rutsey was soon replaced by Neil Peart, who took on the roles of drummer and primary lyricist for all future Rush albums.
