Onetime Disney-channel TV star Olivia Rodrigo came across as an authentically messed-up teenager on her wildly successful debut album, 2021's Sour, because ... well ... she was an authentically messed-up teenager when she made the record.

On Guts -- released in September of 2023 -- Rodrigo lets it all hang out to endearingly authentic effect once again, albeit this time as an an authentically messed-up young adult. And it works. Guts benefits from the sudden maturity that comes hand-in-hand with growing up into romantic misadventure coupled with sudden stardom, revealing Rodrigo as a remarkably unguarded and three-dimensional lyricist taking a page from the confessional and occasionally self-loathing Taylor Swift songbook. It's also a lot more rock-'n'-roll than Sour; the pop-punk diatribes that occasionally intruded on the melodramatic piano balladry of the debut get roughly equal time with the latter here, providing you with many an excuse to pogo around your bedroom when your parents piss you off.
