Quiet Riot's third album became a landmark album in heavy metal, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 and selling over six million copies in the U.S., setting a new standard for metal with its powerful riffs and genre defining songs.
American heavy metal band Quiet Riot’s third album, Metal Health, released on February 28, 1983, catapulted the band into the mainstream and helped define the sound and style of 1980s hair metal. The album’s success was largely driven by the smash single "Cum On Feel the Noize," a cover of British glam rock band Slade's 1973 hit, which became a radio and MTV favorite, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Along with the title track "Metal Health" the album became a cultural anthem, cementing the band's image as heavy metal icons.
Metal Health marked a significant shift for heavy metal by becoming the first metal album to top the Billboard 200, breaking down barriers for the genre. Produced by Spencer Proffer, the album features powerful riffs, aggressive rhythms, and catchy hooks that capture the over-the-top energy of 80s metal. With the lineup of Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Carlos Cavazo (guitar), Rudy Sarzo (bass), and Frankie Banali (drums), Metal Health set a new standard for metal bands aiming for mainstream success. Its influence helped pave the way for hair metal acts like Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Def Leppard.
