Puberty 2 is a confident refinement of all things Mitski. And kinda funny even though the poor gal seems to have been through a lot.
There are few contemporary artists who can match Mitsuki "Mitski" Miyawaki in terms of unflinching emotional honesty, but at least she has a grim sense of humour about her pain.
Puberty 2 -- Mitski's fourth album and the second that wasn't conceived as a school project whilst studying studio composition at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music -- is heavy on dark, often self-lacerating wit even when it's talking about, as she does on "Happy," being kicked to the curb by a boy immediately after sex. That makes it an oddly fun listen despite the fact that none of the experiences Mitski chronicles in her naked songwriting here can have been any fun at all to go through in the first place. The music matches the confused psychological territory, too, veering from sad-eyed indie folk to fizzy quiet/loud punk outburts to burbling electronica at the drop of a hat and further establishing Mitski as a predictably unpredictable mad genius endlessly capable of surprising us with that unpredictability. Real. Deal.
