Joni Mitchell’s 1976 blends her introspective songwriting with jazz-infused instrumentation from collaborators like Jaco Pastorius, marking a pivotal moment in her evolution, it has since become one of her most acclaimed works.
Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joni Mitchell's eighth studio album, Hejira, released in 1976 on Asylum Records, captures the essence of her time on the road in 1975 and 1976, with lyrically rich, sprawling songs that explore themes of travel and self-reflection. The album features standout contributions from jazz musicians, including Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass, Larry Carlton on guitar, and drummer John Guerin, whose jazz-infused sounds perfectly complement Mitchell’s introspective songwriting.
While Hejira didn't achieve the same commercial success as her previous albums—peaking at No. 22 in Canada and No. 13 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., where it was certified gold—it has since become a critical favourite, often hailed as one of Mitchell's finest works, showcasing her continued evolution as a pioneering artist in folk and jazz. The lead single, "Coyote", exemplifies the album's bold, creative spirit.
