Late, great rapper MF Doom's fifth album MM..Food is a concept album "about the things you find on a picnic, or at a picnic table." Of course.
MF Doom: MM..Food (2
Released in 2004 to much underground acclaim, MM..Food is a whimsical slice of absurdist, jazz-inflected hip-hop that stands as a classic of the genre and a relentlessly popular title to this day, years after the untimely death of MC/producer Dumile Daniel Thompson -- familiar to hip-hop fans by the best-known of his multiple stage names, MF Doom -- at just 49 in 2020.
Doom's fifth album, MM..Food (an anagram of "MF Doom" if you hadn't figured that out already) was conceived, as he told Spin at the time, as a concept album about "things you find on a picnic, or at a picnic table" but don't let the rapper's goofy sense of humour distract you from his generous gifts as both a wordsmith and a beatmaker. MF Doom was the real deal. It's a shame commercial success only really caught up with him after his passing, but we'll always have the music.
Guests on the record include Count Bass D, Angelika, 4ize and Mr. Fantastik, while Doom's Madvillainy partner Madlib contributes production to "One Beer." Which you might be inclined to raise in MF Doom's honour -- perhaps while enjoying a nice meal -- after sinking into this must-have hip-hop keeper.
