(2LP, coloured vinyl) celebrate the 25th anniversary of MF Doom's critically acclaimed underground hip-hop classic with two unique coloured pressings for Black Friday 2024.
Operation: Doomsday, the cult classic debut album from British-American rapper MF Doom (Daniel Dumile), dropped on October 19, 1999, through Fondle 'Em Records. It marked MF Doom's solo debut after his earlier work as Zev Love X in KMD. Before the persona of MF Doom emerged, Daniel Dumile faced immense personal loss, including the tragic death of his brother, DJ Subroc, and the collapse of KMD's Black Bastards album, shelved by Elektra Records due to its provocative themes. These events pushed Dumile into years of obscurity and homelessness. Re-emerging in 1997 under the Doom persona, he began releasing music through Bobbito Garcia’s label. The buzz around his singles led to Operation: Doomsday, an album born out of tragedy and tinged with nostalgia for '80s hip-hop.
MF Doom’s unique sound blends lo-fi production, cartoon samples, R&B cuts, and Sade-like sophisti-pop, giving the album a distinct collage of styles. His masked persona mirrors that of comic book villain Dr. Doom, both figures shaped by loss and driven by a mission to "rule" on their own terms. Doom’s abstract, free-form rhymes teem with pop-culture references, sharp humour, and emotional depth. The album feels like both a therapy session and a declaration, filled with raw, introspective lyricism and eccentric beats.
25th anniversary 2024 Black Friday reissue includes two different coloured variants. Variant one includes a double gatefold LP, featuring the original cover art, a Metallic Silver pressing with Purple accents for record one and a Metallic Silver pressing with Green accents for record two. Variant two includes Jason Jagel's alternative cover art pressed on Gold Nugget with Red Splatter vinyl, released via Metal Face Records.
