Mazzy Star was always gonna be a little too narcoleptic and narcoticized to reach the top of the pops, nor was the band's core braintrust of Hope Sandoval and the late David Roback particularly interested in catering to anyone's whims but their own. 

Still, it was nice to see the pair finally making some dough a year after its second album, So Tonight That I Might See, was released in September of 1993 when the utterly lovely single "Fade Into You" finally found some traction amongst the masses thanks to a couple of diligently flogged video clips and the ballad's slow creep into popular culture via placement in what would eventually become countless movies and TV shows. Seriously, it's in everything. Even freakin' Starship Troopers. Vulture named it the "most overused" song in film and television back in 2013, but Entertainment Weekly was moved to drop a piece along the same lines in 2022. So Sandoval is still cashing those "Fade Into You" cheques, at least, even if Roback left us in 2020. 

Thing is, So Tonight That I Might See has soooo much more to offer than that one tune. There's the velveteen Velvet Underground-y pop drone of "Bells Ring" and "Blue Light," the whacked-out Doors psych of the title track and "Mary Of Silence" and the beautiful acoustic Sad Girl balladry of "Five String Serenade" and "Into Dust" -- all of the things to love about Mazzy Star, and all of them never more perfectly expressed than on this record. And, yes, if you really need to hear "Fade Into You" again between Gilmore Girls reruns it's right here.
