Linkin Park's 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, is the best-selling debut album since Guns 'n' Roses' Appetite For Destruction came along in 1987.
Linkin Park's first album had a tangled and torturous decade-long gestation period, but all that work was not for naught: It's one of the biggest-selling rock records of the modern era, having moved more than 12 million copies in the California band's native U.S. and more than 32 freakin' million copies worldwide since its release in 2000.
Something about the album's mix of suburban-white-male angst, metal riffing and periodic rappin' and scratchin' struck a chord with mass audiences from the moment Hybrid Theory landed and has continued to strike that chord to this day. Sadly Chester Bennington, the vocalist and lyricist who helped propel tunes "One Step Closer," "Papercut" and "Crawling" onto the rock-radio airwaves and into the hearts of tortured adolescents the world over, ended his own life by hanging in 2017. Hybrid Theory, however, refuses to die.
