"CALIGULA" elevates Kristin Hayter's vision, blending raw intensity and diverse influences into a powerful exploration of violence and survival - now available on 2LP transparent vinyl!
"CALIGULA" elevates Kristin Hayter's artistic vision to new heights, showcasing her intense and vengeful sonic imagination in a way that surpasses her previous work and reaches an unmatched auditory experience within her body of work.
Following her 2017 self-released album "All Bitches Die," "CALIGULA" stands as Hayter's most ambitious creation. It reveals the full extent of her skills as a vocalist, composer, and storyteller. With its expansive scope and diverse influences, "CALIGULA" delivers a demonic intensity, presenting itself as an outsider's opera that is both magnificent and raw. Hayter eschews traditional genres to craft her own unique universe. Fully embodying the name Lingua Ignota, derived from the German mystic Hildegard of Bingen, meaning "unknown language," this music defies categorization and is unlike anything else in today's landscape.
Hayter has consistently approached themes of violence and vengeance with a bold perspective, and "CALIGULA" further explores the transformation of the survivor at the heart of this narrative. Embracing the encroaching darkness, it sharpens itself through the cruelty it has faced, mirroring betrayal with its own. It unleashes fury, shifting from chilling power to vulnerable anguish as Hayter snarls, “Let them hate me so long as they fear me.” While "CALIGULA" is deeply personal and critically aware, it also tackles broader themes; the well-documented decadence, corruption, and senseless violence associated with emperor Caligula still resonate today. Hayter weaves sharp commentary on the abuse of power and invalidation throughout the album.
Collaborating closely with Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets studio in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Hayter moves away from the industrial and electronic elements of her earlier works to embrace the physical intensity and intimate menace of her famed live performances. She employs unconventional recording methods and sound sources, alongside an extensive array of live instrumentation and collaborators, including noise artist Sam McKinlay, drummer Lee Buford, and percussionist Ted Byrnes, with guest contributions from Dylan Walker, Mike Berdan, and Noraa Kaplan. "CALIGULA" is a monumental, multi-layered epic that gives voice to the silenced and marginalized.
