The Killers' 2004 debut, Hot Fuss, has endured over the years as a veritable hit machine.
The rise of the Killers during the early 2000s is reminiscent of the rise of Stone Temple Pilots during the early 1990s: a new band with a bunch of monster singles out of the box is initially viewed with suspicion by critics and other "serious" observers but goes on to prove itself as much, much better than anyone realized at first.
In hindsight, everyone should have known Killers were the real deal right away 'cause Hot Fuss is a freakin' hit machine above and beyond the four indelible singles -- "Mr. Brightside," "Somebody Told Me," "All These Things That I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It" -- that have propelled it to well over seven million in sales worldwide over the past 20 years. It's veritably dripping in, to borrow a phrase from one of the band's later cuts, "glamorous indie rock-'n'-roll" of the post-punk/New Wave variety. And if there's always been a hint of Vegas to what Killers do that's just fine because Killers are actually from Las Vegas. It's in their blood.
