Elvin Jones and Richard Davis's 1967 album showcases their improvisational brilliance and innovative spirit. The album blends spontaneous collaboration with diverse musical influences to create a truly unique piece of jazz canon.
Heavy Sounds, the dynamic album from American jazz drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Richard Davis recorded in 1967 and released on Impulse. Initially envisioned as a trio session featuring Jones, Davis, and guitarist Larry Coryell, the album took a different turn when Coryell was unable to attend. Producer Bob Thiele encouraged Jones and Davis to create something together in his absence, leading to an impromptu 11½-minute duet of “Summertime". Reflecting on the experience, Davis noted, “No discussion, no editing, no plan; I just started playing the melody, and there he was... I just thought there was something very brotherly about that particular piece".
Inspired by this spontaneous collaboration, Thiele invited the duo back to the studio the next day, where Jones brought in saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene. Together, they recorded several tracks, including the standard “Here’s That Rainy Day", Greene’s original “M.E." and two of Foster’s compositions, “Raunchy Rita” and “Shiny Stockings". They also attempted a version of “Take the ‘A’ Train", which unfortunately got lost. Additionally, the session produced “Elvin’s Guitar Blues", where Jones showcased his acoustic guitar skills. Although he described himself as “not a real guitarist", he expressed a deep love for the instrument, recalling an old blues tune taught to him by a man named Red during his childhood. Influenced by legendary guitarists like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, Jones's heartfelt performance reflects the rich musical tapestry that defines Heavy Sounds. The album not only highlights the improvisational talents of its musicians but also solidifies Jones's legacy as a pioneering force in jazz, renowned for his innovative rhythms and collaborative spirit.
