The second album from English heavy metal band Iron Maiden built upon the foundations of the band's self-titled debut, refining the band's sound and cleaning up the raw production found in their first album.
Killers, the second studio album from English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on February 16, 1981, in the UK, marked the debut of guitarist Adrian Smith and the final appearance of vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who faced dismissal due to issues stemming from his alcohol and cocaine use. Produced by Martin Birch, who would go on to shape the sound of Iron Maiden in their subsequent eight albums, Killers stands out as the only album featuring two instrumentals which were written by bassist Steve Harris.
The album features tracks like "Murders in the Rue Morgue", inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, and revisits songs that date back to the band's formative years, like "Wrathchild" and "Strange World", originating as early as 1976. The album spent eight weeks on the UK chart, the North American version included "Twilight Zone" and the Australian version saw the addition of the Skyhooks cover "Women in Uniform." The Killers World Tour marked Iron Maiden's first performances in the US, starting in Las Vegas alongside Judas Priest, and solidified the songs from Killers as fan favourites that continue to appear on nearly every tour. This album helped establish Iron Maiden’s presence in the heavy metal scene and paved the way for their future successes.
2024 reissue includes the 2015 remastered version of all tracks, released via Parlophone Records.
