The self-titled debut album from English heavy metal band Iron Maiden laid the groundwork for the band's legendary status, exponentially increasing the popularity of heavy metal and earning the band a lasting legacy as pioneers of the genre.
The self-titled debut studio album from English heavy metal band Iron Maiden introduced the world to Iron Maiden's raw energy and genre-defining heavy metal sound. Iron Maiden is the only Iron Maiden album produced by Wil Malone, who Iron Maiden later claimed showed little interest in the project, leading the band to produce much of the album themselves in just 13 days. Recording took place at Kingsway Studios in West London in January 1980, with final mixes completed at Morgan Studios in February during the Metal for Muthas Tour.
Before working with Malone, the band attempted to record with two other producers, Guy Edwards was dismissed for delivering a "muddy" sound, while Andy Scott insisted on changing Steve Harris's bass technique, leading to his dismissal as well. The band decided to keep Malone, believing they could work around him. Despite their criticisms of the production quality, many fans and critics still appreciate the album's raw sound.
In support of the album, Iron Maiden embarked on the Iron Maiden Tour, where they played their first concerts in mainland Europe and were surprised to discover their burgeoning success outside the UK. Steve Harris noted that their UK prestige transformed into word-of-mouth acclaim, leading to massive banners welcoming them in places they'd never heard of before, showcasing the band's growing international recognition.
2024 reissue includes the 2015 remastered version of all tracks, released via Parlophone Records.
