The international smash hit "Take Me To Church" turned Irish singer/songwriter Hozier's eponymous debut album into an overnight success story.
Not to say that Irish singer/songwriter Andrew John Hozier-Byrne didn't pay his dues -- he was once a backup singer for Billy Ocean -- but transatlantic notoriety came very quickly to him when the durable anthem "Take Me To Church" took over the airwaves in 2013.
With that tune serving as the lead single for his self-titled debut album, released in September of 2014, it was thus somewhat preordained that Hozier would be a hit on delivery. Critics were kind to Hozier's soulful take on sensitive indie-rock and gutbusting vocal chops, though, and the fact that the record would spawn six other successful singles -- including "From Eden," "Sedated" and "Work Song" -- suggested that this chap was going to be more than a one-hit wonder. Hozier, the album, has gone on to sell more than a million copies. Not a bad start.
