(Clear vinyl) Finnish gothic rock band's 2001 album features some of frontman Ville Valo's most potent song writing and vocal performances.
The third studio album by the Finnish gothic rock band H.I.M. Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights returns to vinyl for a limited edition reissue. The album departs from the band's previously dark sound as it features sleek pop-style production from Kevin Shirley. Shirley previously worked with well-established arena rock bands Aerosmith and Bon Jovi.
The recording process of the album lasted almost a year. The band wanted to make a record influenced by proto-grunge acts like Neil Young and stoner-rock bands like Black Sabbath. The band's label wanted to continue to grow their following and commercial success so they took a heavy-handed approach to the production of the record, choosing the producer and mixing engineer. As a result, Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights is a bit of a dichotomy and although not immediately successful it has found a cult following in the years since its release.
H.I.M. sold over 10 million albums during the band's lifetime. The band were known for their distinctive melding of metal, gothic rock and melancholic. The band coined their eclectic genre as love metal. After a long career of recording and playing live shows since 1997 the band decided to play their final show at the Helldone Festival on New Year's Eve 2017.
2024 reissue on a limited edition clear vinyl released via BMG.
