Perhaps The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill remains Lauryn Hill's only solo album because she got it totally perfect the first time 'round...
There could be no doubt who was wearing the pants in the Fugees all along once the newly emancipated Lauryn Hill dropped her first -- and only -- solo album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, in the summer of 1998.
Probably the most acclaimed and most successful record by a female hip-hop artist of all time (although it's not strictly a hip-hop album, dabbling as it does in soul and reggae along the way), Miseducation and its singles "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor" and "Everything Is Everything" dominated the radio and video airwaves for months and turned Hill into a household name pretty much around the globe. It sold 10 million copies in the U.S. alone and 20 million worldwide, turning Hill into a superstar but also triggering a troubled relationship with fame that would lead to erratic performances and frequent retreats from the public eye down the road. Indeed, Hill has never managed to record a studio follow-up. But maybe she simply doesn't want to tarnish The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill's legacy after getting it absolutely perfect the first time out.
