Glass Beams' second EP, heavily inspired by Khunragnabin adjacent jam rock and eastern musical legend Ravi Shankar, fuses both musical words to create something wholly original and compellingly groovy.
The second EP from the psychedelic Melbourne-based trio Glass Beams, Mahal, builds on their distinctive style, blending traditional Indian music with elements of Aussie surf rock. The five-track EP features textured, experimental, and hypnotic compositions without obvious lyrics or samples. Tracks like the title song “Mahal", with its memorable guitar line, and the funky "Orb," which evolves into a propulsive rhythm, highlight the band’s innovative fusion of genres. Despite their limited discography, Glass Beams have already sold out shows, amassed 1.1 million monthly Spotify listeners, and gained a rapidly growing social media following. Their elusive presence, combined with their rich, genre-blending sound, only adds to their intrigue.
Glass Beams initially planned to keep their identities secret until founding member Rajan Silva revealed himself in an interview with Rolling Stone India. The other members of the band remain unidentified, maintaining an air of mystery around the group. Formed during lockdown, the trio released their debut EP Mirage in 2021, a project described as “a love letter” to Silva’s Indian heritage.
Released in 2024 via Ninja Tune.
