Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim conjure a breezy bossa nova masterpiece and launch the career of a young Astrud Gilberto in the process.
And just like that, bossa nova was a "thing."
Getz/Gilberto, the historic 1964 pairing of American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto -- with a little help from composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim -- exported the sun-dappled, easy-breezy sound of Brazil at its coolest and most chilled-out to more than a million record buyers worldwide. But besides being ground zero for the mid-'60s bossa nova explosion and one of the most popular jazz albums of all time, Getz/Gilberto is also notable for kick-starting the career of a young singer by the name of Astrud Gilberto. She sings on two tracks, "Corcovado" and the ageless "Garota De Ipanema" (AKA "The Girl From Ipanema"), and shared in a Grammy Award with Getz, Gilberto and Jobim for Record of the Year for the latter and ... well ... the rest is history.
