(Clear vinyl) Gandalf’s 1969 self-titled album delivers a captivating mix of psychedelic covers and original tracks. A must have for any massive fan of 60s psychedelia.
Gandalf’s 1969 self-titled album shines as one of the great lost psychedelic gems of the late '60s. Though brief at just 31 minutes, it leaves a lasting impact with its eclectic mix of covers and original compositions. The band breathes new life into songs by legends like Harry Belafonte and Bing Crosby, transforming these classics through the lens of psychedelic rock. They also include three tracks written by the acclaimed singer-songwriter Tim Hardin.
The standout track, "Can You Travel in the Dark Alone", captures the album’s unique sound with its mesmerizing melody and evocative lyrics, enhanced by a distinctive harmonic minor flair woven into the psychedelic vibe. Another highlight, the original song "I Watch the Moon", demonstrates the band’s skill at blending thoughtful songwriting with rich musical textures. The album boasts fine guitar work, expressive vocals, and atmospheric organ arrangements. It’s a mystery why such a talented group didn’t continue beyond this release.
