Florence and the Machine's hit debut, Lungs, has no problem living up to its name.
Lungs could not have a more appropriate title. Florence Welch just belts and belts and belts and lets it all out with her personal volume perpetually set at a cathartic "11" throughout her 2009 debut album with the nebulous backing band known as the Machine. It's the musical equivalent of standing on a windblown ocean cliff for 45 minutes while cloaked in some kind of animal skin and ... I dunno ... waving a sceptre or a trident or a staff or something at the roiling firmament. Maybe on fire, too. Definitely near fire, at any rate, if not actually engulfed in flames. Rolling Stone magazine put it best: "The best bits feel like being chased through a moonless night by a sexy moor witch." Can't really top that.
