(2LP, cloudy grey vinyl) The third studio album from the English doom metal band Electric Wizard, showcases the band's blend of doom metal and stoner rock and is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest stoner rock albums of all time.
Dopethrone, the third studio album by British metal band Electric Wizard, debuted on September 25, 2000, through Rise Above Records. Following the success of their previous album, Come My Fanatics... (1997), the band faced encouragement from Rise Above Records owner Lee Dorrian to craft a follow-up. However, there were growing struggles in the band, with many of the members developing drug habits that hampered the album's production process.
The band entered Chuckalumba Studios in May 2000 with only three tracks ready: "Dopethrone", "Funeralopolis", and "We Hate You". In an impressive feat, they recorded the entire album in just three days. Oborn, who wrote all the lyrics, drew inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Musically, Dopethrone combines doom metal and stoner rock, heavily influenced by legendary British bands like Black Sabbath and Motörhead.
After releasing Dopethrone, Electric Wizard toured with Sons of Otis in England. Critics embraced Dopethrone, with Exclaim!, CMJ New Music Monthly and The Village Voice praising its raw energy. Over the years, retrospective reviews have continued to celebrate the album, with Decibel ranking it among the "Top 20 Stoner Rock Albums of All Time" in September 2007 and Terrorizer declaring it the album of the decade in December 2009.
2024 reissue pressed on two cloudy grey vinyl, released via Rise Above Records.
