Mac DeMarco went directly from touring his debut album, 2, into the ground into recording Salad Days at home so it feels like a more confident and road-hardened extension of its predecessor.
Edmonton-raised Mac DeMarco went straight from spending a year-and-a-half on the road in support of his 2012 debut, 2, into his newly established home studio in Brooklyn to make Salad Days so, unsurprisingly, this record doesn't sound radically different from its predecessor. Just ... better.
DeMarco's songwriting is more direct and less self-consciously quirky here, his playing (on every instrument heard on the album) necessarily sharper after months of touring, his production aesthetic more refined whilst still retaining its shambolic DIY charm and his comfort level with simply being Mac DeMarco -- never really a problem to begin with -- audibly apparent. DeMarco found his unlikely audience by being himself in the first place so it would have been a bit foolish to immediately rewrite the book.
