The endlessly prolific Lana Del Rey has been known for adopting many a fictional persona on her recordings since the beginning, but on 2021's revealing Chemtrails Over The Country Club the Los Angeles singer/songwriter dropped the cinematic facades and let her own personality reign supreme.

Working with ever-present producer Jack Antonoff -- the Taylor Swift/Lorde right-hand-man with whom she also worked on 2019's soft-hued Norman Fucking Rockwell -- Del Rey took a further step away from the gauzy electro-pop of her earlier releases here, taking her noir-ish depictions of Americana in folk and country directions more genuinely befitting the term "Americana." Chemtrails Over The Country Club itself isn't terribly noir on the Del Rey scale, mind you, offering numerous heartfelt songs dedicated, as she put it at the time, to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings" and closing with a sunny cover of Joni Mitchell's Ladies Of The Canyon ditty "For Free." It's cool when an artist can still surprise you seven albums in. It usually means they've got a lot left to say.
