Crystal Castles' 2008 debut is a scorching blast of lo-fi electro-noise beamed in from a rave at the end of the world.
Before they blew apart in spectacular -- and highly troubling -- fashion in 2014, the original Crystal Castles duo of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath were making some of the most exciting (and often highly troubling) 21st-century electronic music on the planet.
The band's self-titled 2008 debut introduced the world at large to the lo-fi electro-scuzz the pair had been circulating on underground vinyl singles for a couple of years prior and it's still a bracing listen, a rush of warped videogame blips and bloops, crusty death-disco beats and grating ambient noise crowned by the then teenaged Glass's screeching, heavily processed vocals. Music this mercurial wasn't meant to last, so there would only be two more albums from Crystal Castles but every one of them sounds like it was beamed in from a rave at the end of the world.
