Most bands wait their whole lives for a "Linger" or a "Dreams." The Cranberries delivered both on their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?
The Cranberries' debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, was a lovely surprise to North American audiences unacquainted with the Irish quartet's previous EPs when the indelible singles "Dreams" and "Linger" finally wafted across the Atlantic towards the record's release in March of 1993.
And they are indelible, those singles, make no mistake. But the rest of Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? is pretty sweet, too, immediately showcasing the gift for dream-pop sparkle and the commanding vocal presence of late lead singer Dolores O'Riordan that would take over the entire planet when "Zombie" and the massive No Need To Argue came along just a year-and-a-half later. There's a beguiling innocence to this album that -- ahem -- lingers to this day because it's doubtful anyone involved was aware at the time just how much the Cranberries would soon catch on with the world at large. They just wrote some really good tunes and let the songs do the work for them.
