Although it wasn't initially well received by critics at the time of release, modern reviewers have been far kinder to the album. Many of them praise Coltrane's arpeggio-rich harp playing and spiritual approach to musical composition.
The supporting band for A Monastic Trio consists of Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Garrison, Ben Riley and Rashied Ali.
This 2024 reissue is released through Verve Recordings on their Verve By Request series.
