Cigarettes After Sex staked out its smoky little corner of dream-pop territory early on with its self-titled 2017 debut album and has been living there ever since.
Texas-reared singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Greg Gonzalez couldn't have chosen a better name for his band because Cigarettes After Sex does indeed deal in soothing, somnambulant sounds tailor-made for lying contentedly back in bed and staring up at the ceiling through a haze of eddying smoke rings.
Gonzalez firmly established the dreamy Cigarettes After Sex playbook -- ethereal, sorta-shoegaze atmospheres and a mildly danceable electro-pulse topped with distant, androgynous vocals -- on the group's self-titled 2017 debut and hasn't messed with the formula too much since. If you dig one Cigs record and share the band's fanhood for, say, Francoise Hardy, the Cocteau Twins or the Twin Peaks soundtrack, then, you'll likely dig 'em all. But this is definitely the place to start.
