1970s reissue, Brazil VG
Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, born on June 19, 1944, and widely known as Chico Buarque, is a Brazilian artist recognized as a singer-songwriter, guitarist, composer, playwright, writer, and poet. He is celebrated for his music, which often explores social, economic, and cultural themes related to Brazil.
As the eldest son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Chico Buarque lived in various locations during his childhood, primarily in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He began writing and studying literature early on and discovered music through the bossa nova works of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. In the 1960s, he performed as a singer and guitarist and wrote a play that the Brazilian military dictatorship deemed subversive. Facing threats from the military government, Buarque relocated to Italy in 1969 but returned to Brazil in 1970. Despite continued government censorship, he continued to record, perform, and write. In the 1980s, he released several albums and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was honored with the Camões Prize, the most prestigious literary award in the Portuguese language. Although the award was delayed by four years due to actions by Jair Bolsonaro, Buarque received it in April 2023.
