Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was a revolutionary figure in modern music, celebrated for his remarkable four-and-a-half-octave vocal range and his groundbreaking blend of free jazz, Delta blues, and rock & roll. Although he never reached mainstream success, his experimental style left a lasting impact on punk, new wave, and post-rock.

Captain Beefheart formed the Magic Band in 1967, despite early setbacks with rejected albums and lineup changes, Beefheart created iconic works like Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off, Baby. After many periods of dramatic commercial and artistic shifts, he retired from music in 1982 to focus on visual art.
