Phoebe Bridgers's full-length debut, Stranger In The Alps, is maybe guilty of "oversharing" but that's what makes it stick.
Phoebe Bridgers was just 23 and Boygenius -- her hugely popular "supergroup" with fellow Sad Girls Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus -- but a glimmer in her eye when Stranger In The Alps landed in September of 2017, but she certainly didn't feel like a stranger by the time this record was finished working on you.
And work on you Stranger In The Alps does. Much like Baker's own debut, Sprained Ankle, Bridgers's first full-length gets under your skin because it allows you to live (somewhat uncomfortably) inside its author's skin for 45 minutes. It might be guilty of oversharing a little, yes, but if you've ever wanted a dead-on approximation in song, for instance, of how it feels to get high, send nude photos of yourself to someone and immediately regret it, "Demi Moore" has got you covered. This is as raw as it gets. And to hammer that point home, Bridgers even covers "You Missed My Heart" -- an aching song by Red House Painters frontman Mark Kozelek, who is also occasionally guilty of oversharing himself -- on the back end. A strong first foot forward by a major young talent who would level up considerably on 2020's Punisher.
