The Record proved that joining forces as Boygenius was a very smart decision indeed for Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
The ladies of Boygenius took a wee break from each other once touring in support of their self-titled surprise-hit debut EP wrapped up in 2018.
Phoebe Bridgers made Punisher, Julien Baker recorded Little Oblivions and Lucy Dacus completed Home Video, all to much more acclaim and public excitement than they were previously accustomed to. The trio finally reunited in November of 2021, but it would be another year before word of an actual, imminent Boygenius album began to circulated. The rumours proved to be true, and The Record was released in March of 2023 to much, much more acclaim and excitement than anything any of the young women involved had ever released. The album would end up at or near the top of countless year-end "best of" lists and took three of the finest underground Sad Girl indie singer/songwriters of the 21st century aboveground from the main stage at Coachella in California to festivals and amphitheatres on both sides of the Atlantic. Bridgers, Baker and Dacus were suddenly ... pop stars. And all because they'd found a way to showcase their very distinct individual talents in a group context that somehow elevated those talents to another level.
