Teaming up as the Sad Girl "supergroup" Boygenius in 2018 propelled singer/songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to a whole new level of popular visibility.
"Supergroups" are inherently disappointing because the whole almost never equates to something greater than the sum of its pop parts, but Boygenius proved exactly the opposite.
Singer/songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus all had their respective cults before they teamed up to form a Sad Girl supergroup of their own in 2018. The three friends hadn't really planned on joining forces for more than a triple-bill tour, in fact, but their plans to casually record a joint single and maybe a fun cover so they had a couple of new songs to perform onstage together nightly quickly yielded enough material for an entire EP. Boygenius, the mini-album -- a harmonious, folk-y blending of three powerful female voices and distinct songwriting styles -- was subsequently released that October to widespread acclaim and unexpectedly strong sales, elevating all three members to a whole new level of popular notoriety. By the time a full-length Boygenius album, The Record, was released in 2023 the band was headlining amphitheatres and festival stages all over North America. Sometimes "supergroup" isn't a dirty word, after all.
The fifth-anniversary "Revisionist History" ediiton of Boygenius comes pressed on yellow vinyl in a new gatefold jacket with lyrics.
