Inscrutable U.K. outfit Black Country, New Road rebounds from the sudden departure of its original singer with Forever Howlong, a joyously weird third album featuring vocals by all three female members of the band.
Black Country, New Road was just four days away from releasing its acclaimed second album, Ants From Up There, in February of 2022 when lead singer Isaac Wood abruptly quit the band.
Undeterred, the Cambridge sextet has soldiered on with its three female members -- Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery and May Kershaw -- taking the vocal reins and recently told the NME that listeners can expect a poppier sound on its third album, Forever Howlong, that's "catchy and likeable but (has) a deep-set weirdness." Sounds about right. It wouldn't be Black Country, New Road without some deep-set weirdness, after all. Fans have already had a taste of what the new lineup has been getting up to with the 2023 tour document Live At Bush Hall, but Forever Howlong is the first "official" next step forward by a uniquely strange band that's been drawing comparisons to confident outliers like Black Midi, Slint and Radiohead since its Mercury Prize-nominated debut, For The First Time, came around in 2021. One suspects they'll be just fine on this -- ahem -- new road. Isaac who?
