The song features infectious hooks and humorous storytelling, the track also prominently features a sample from Freddie Scott's 1968 hit "You Got What I Need". Despite its unconventional approach, including Biz Markie's distinctive, off-key singing, the song achieved significant commercial success, reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Just a Friend" is celebrated for its playful narrative about unrequited love and remains one of Biz Markie’s most iconic and enduring hits.
