(Silver grey vinyl, expanded edition) Avril Lavigne's second album, with its darker, heavier sound influenced by post-grunge and melodic rock, solidified its place as a defining album of early 2000s pop-punk while also foreshadowing the rise of emo.
Under My Skin, Canadian singer Avril Lavigne’s second studio album, was released in Europe on May 21, 2004, and globally on May 25, 2004, under Arista and RCA Records. Initially uninterested in working with professional writers, Lavigne bonded with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk in the summer of 2003. Their friendship began after they met at a party following the SARS benefit concerts in Toronto, where Kreviazuk’s husband, Raine Maida, and his band, Our Lady Peace, opened for Lavigne. Lavagine and Kreviazuk bonded over lunch, discussing Lavigne’s vision for the new album. They spent almost three weeks writing songs at Maida’s warehouse in Toronto before moving the recording process to Kreviazuk and Maida's home in Malibu.
Kreviazuk recommended that Maida produce Lavigne's new album, as production was a skill Lavigne hadn’t yet developed. Maida produced five tracks, including "Fall to Pieces", which he co-wrote with Lavigne. Additional production came from Don Gilmore, who worked on three songs, two of which were co-written by Lavigne and Kreviazuk, and Butch Walker, who produced three songs in three days. Lavigne also collaborated with Evanescence’s Ben Moody on "Nobody’s Home" and co-wrote the remaining tracks with her guitarist, Evan Taubenfeld. The result is a raw, emotionally charged album that blends darker, nu-metal influences with Lavigne’s signature pop-punk sound.
2024 expanded edition reissue pressed on silver grey vinyl, released via Legacy Recordings.
