(2LP, white vinyl, expanded edition) Avril Lavigne’s fourth studio album marks a shift to a more introspective, acoustic pop-rock sound, exploring themes of heartbreak and loss.
Goodbye Lullaby, Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne’s fourth studio album, dropped on March 2, 2011, marking a shift to a more introspective, stripped-down pop-rock sound. The album, heavily influenced by Lavigne's relationship with her ex-husband Deryck Whibley, explores themes of heartbreak and personal struggles. Lavigne described it as dealing with difficult experiences, aiming to convey deeper, more personal stories through largely acoustic tracks featuring simple piano and guitar arrangements.
Recorded over nearly two years, Goodbye Lullaby showcases Lavigne’s growing production skills, collaborating with producers like Max Martin, Shellback, Butch Walker, and Deryck Whibley. The album debuted in the top five in over 15 countries and reached number one in Australia, Greece, Hong Kong, and Japan. With 1.5 million copies sold worldwide by 2013. The album includes hit singles like "What the Hell", "Smile" and "Wish You Were Here" and was supported by Lavigne’s Black Star Tour. Adam R. Holz of Plugged In noted that the album’s mellow acoustic songs paint a mournful picture of Lavigne trying to understand why her marriage failed.
2024 expanded edition reissue pressed on two white vinyl, features the tracklist from the digital expanded edition on vinyl for the first time, released via Legacy Recordings.
