Arctic Monkeys' groovy and versatile fifth album is a fan favourite and a perennial hot seller despite being one of the band's more "experimental" offerings
Arctic Monkeys: AM [DOMINO]
Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys decided to shake things up a wee bit in the studio for their fifth album, 2013's AM, but instead of alienating longtime fans by suddenly rocketing off in a number of unforeseen directions at once -- from psych and stoner-rock to hip-hop-shocked R&B and soul -- the quartet notched what doggedly remains its most popular recorded offering to date on both European and North American shores.
AM just never stops selling, probably because it's deep enough to continually offer something fresh in the mix to longtime Arctic Monkeys fans the more they go back for repeat listens but also because even people who don't consider themselves Arctic Monkeys fans will generally find something amidst the genre-blurring fun going on here to make them Arctic Monkeys fans. It's just that kinda record. And, hey, Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age makes an appearance, too.
Arctic Monkeys won British Album of the Year for AM at the 2014 Brit Awards, while the record was also nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize. NME named it the best album of the decade and, a month after its release, ranked it 449 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Rolling Stone placed it at 346 in the 2020 edition of its "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. As they say in the music business, AM has legs.
