Gracie Abrams has risen to the ranks of such A-list Sad Girls as Taylor Swift, Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers with her second LP, The Secret Of Us.
Let's be honest: Gracie Abrams doesn't need to work. She's the daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams, after all, who's somehow managed to inherit both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises and is, thus, probably richer than God.
Gracie Abrams definitely needs to to get some stuff off her chest, though, so Gracie Abrams works. And on her second full-length album, 2024's The Secret Of Us, the Sad Girl thing Gracie Abrams does works better than it ever has before on record. She's still young and finding her feet maybe, but The Secret Of Us displays a far more distinct personality and a keener sense of her own songwriting abilities than the EPs that preceded it and 2023's fine-but-familiar Good Riddance album. She had some high-powered help in the studio, too: the National's Aaron Dessner, gadabout Australian producer Sam de Jong, Taylor Swift's right-hand man Jack Antonoff and ... yes ... Tay-Tay herself, serving as co-writer and co-producer of the single "Us." Abrams even got to open up some dates on Swift's high-falutin' Eras tour so Taylor is clearly intent on elevating her pal to the upper echelon of Sad Girldom where the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski and Julien Baker dwell. Also? The video for "Risk," where Abrams goes drunk-stalking a guy she has a crush on, is kind of adorable.
